Trump’s Call with Taiwan May Impact US-China Business Relations

China has issued a cautionary message to the United States concerning the handling of Taiwan-related matters following former U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement of his intention to communicate with Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te. The prospect of a direct dialogue between a U.S. president and Taiwan’s leadership is particularly sensitive for Beijing, as China regards Taiwan as part of its territory and opposes any official foreign interactions with the island’s government.

In China’s view, Taiwan is a renegade province destined for eventual reunification with the mainland, potentially through force. Beijing vehemently opposes foreign governments engaging diplomatically with Taiwan as if it were an independent nation and routinely condemns high-level diplomatic exchanges with Taipei. Chinese authorities have cautioned that engaging in such dialogues sends misleading signals to those advocating for Taiwan’s independence and constitutes interference in China’s domestic affairs.

Recent years have seen escalating tensions surrounding Taiwan. Notably, in 2022, China initiated extensive military drills around the island in response to a visit by a prominent U.S. official. Further fueling Beijing’s ire have been American arms sales and political support for Taiwan. Despite these pressures, Taiwan identifies itself as a self-governing democracy, officially known as the Republic of China. Its government dismisses Beijing’s claims of sovereignty, asserting its citizens’ right to elect their leaders and establish international diplomatic relations.

The U.S. maintains a delicate balance through its “One China” policy, formally recognizing Beijing while sustaining unofficial connections with Taiwan. This policy framework also includes the provision of defensive weapons to Taiwan under the Taiwan Relations Act. The potential call between Trump and Lai recalls a similar situation in 2016, when Trump spoke with then-Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, a rare occurrence that drew sharp criticism from China. Any renewed contact could exacerbate the already strained U.S.-China relations and provoke further military demonstrations by China near Taiwan.
