China has voiced strong objections to a proposed sanctions bill in the United States that targets major purchasers of Russian oil and natural gas. This legislation aims to impose penalties on the largest global buyers of Russian crude and natural gas, with China being one of the primary targets. In response, China has pledged to take all necessary actions to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of its companies.
Speaking on behalf of the Chinese government, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian emphasized China’s firm opposition to unilateral sanctions that are not sanctioned by the United Nations Security Council or grounded in international law. Lin argued that such measures could set a dangerous precedent and undermine the established norms of international diplomacy.
The U.S. proposal seeks to exert pressure on countries that continue to engage in energy trade with Russia, a move seen as part of broader efforts to curb Russia’s economic influence. However, China’s government has warned that these sanctions could prove counterproductive, especially if they employ double standards or coercive tactics that do not align with international legal frameworks.
Lin Jian reiterated China’s stance against what it considers unlawful unilateral sanctions, cautioning the U.S. against actions that might escalate tensions or lead to unintended consequences. The spokesperson underscored the importance of adhering to internationally agreed-upon rules and cautioned that undermining these could have ripple effects on global trade and diplomatic relations.
