Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has stirred fresh discourse regarding Kuala Lumpur’s adherence to the One China policy by affirming his stance that Taiwan is part of China. This declaration has garnered a nod of approval from Beijing and sparked disapproval in Taipei. Anwar, however, emphasized Malaysia’s ongoing commitment to a peaceful resolution of tensions across the Taiwan Strait.
The One China policy, a cornerstone of Malaysia’s diplomatic framework, was instituted in 1974 when Kuala Lumpur formalized relations with Beijing. According to this policy, Malaysia recognizes the People’s Republic of China as the sole legitimate government of China and acknowledges Beijing’s claim over Taiwan. Nevertheless, Malaysia underscores the necessity of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
In response to Anwar’s comments, Beijing expressed support, interpreting them as alignment with its stance on Taiwan. Conversely, Taiwan dismissed the remarks, reiterating its stance of being a separate entity from China and cautioning that endorsements of Beijing’s viewpoint could exacerbate concerns about military pressure in the region. Although Malaysia lacks formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan, they engage significantly through economic, cultural, and technological exchanges facilitated by representative offices.
Anwar’s statements may exert some pressure on Malaysia’s relations with Taiwan, particularly affecting Taiwanese business and investor sentiment amid geopolitical uncertainties. Nevertheless, Malaysia is expected to continue its diplomatic balancing act, nurturing its robust relationship with China alongside its economic interactions with Taiwan.
The economic linkage between Malaysia and Taiwan is significant, with bilateral trade reaching an impressive US$54.49 billion in 2025, positioning Taiwan as a key trading partner for Malaysia. Despite the diplomatic strains, both economies share substantial mutual interests, which could serve as a foundation for sustained cooperation moving forward.
