China’s military has reported the expulsion of a Philippine aircraft from the airspace over Huangyan Dao, an area China asserts as its territory. The People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Southern Theater Command stated that a Philippine C-208 aircraft entered the airspace without obtaining Chinese approval, prompting a response from China’s naval and air forces.
The PLA explained that its forces monitored the aircraft and issued warnings before directing it to leave the area. This incident underscores the ongoing territorial disputes in the South China Sea, where China claims sovereignty over Huangyan Dao, also known internationally as Scarborough Shoal.
China has expressed that the incident represents a violation of its sovereignty and raises the risk of unintended maritime or aerial incidents. In response, the PLA has issued a warning to the Philippines, advising against actions it views as provocative. The Chinese military has emphasized it remains on high alert to safeguard its territorial claims and security interests in the region.
The South China Sea is a significant area of geopolitical tension, with multiple countries, including the Philippines, contesting China’s expansive territorial claims. The recent incident highlights the fragile state of affairs and the potential for escalations in the contested waters.
