Nvidia is set to acquire the AI development platform Hugging Face in a deal valued at around $12.93 billion, marking one of the largest acquisitions for the chip manufacturer. This strategic move aims to bolster Nvidia’s standing in the swiftly expanding open-source artificial intelligence sector.

Established in 2016 by Clément Delangue, Julien Chaumond, and Thomas Wolf, Hugging Face offers a platform that allows developers to access, evaluate, share, and construct AI models. The company also provides essential resources such as datasets, software libraries, and cloud services that are pivotal for the creation and deployment of AI applications.

This acquisition will enable Nvidia to tap into a vast community of AI developers and open-weight models, which have seen a surge in demand from businesses seeking cost-effective alternatives to pricey AI systems. The deal is structured such that Nvidia will disburse approximately $11.9 billion to investors, with an additional provision of up to $1 billion in equity-based retention incentives for employees joining the company.

Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang emphasized that Hugging Face will continue operating as an open platform, serving the broader AI ecosystem. This acquisition comes at a time when major tech companies are actively developing their own AI chips, which could potentially lessen their reliance on Nvidia’s processors. By branching into AI software and open-source development, Nvidia aims to diversify its business amid growing competition in the AI hardware market.
