In a significant diplomatic meeting, India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Beijing, underlining the importance of maintaining peace and tranquillity along their shared border for enhancing bilateral relations. This meeting represented the 25th round of dialogue between the special representatives of India and China, focusing on the protracted boundary dispute that has historically marred ties between the two nations.
The conversation primarily revolved around boundary delimitation, robust border management, and fostering cooperation across the frontier. Both countries reviewed the positive developments in their relationship and explored avenues to sustain stability along the contested Line of Actual Control. They reiterated their shared commitment to seeking a political resolution to the boundary issue, emphasizing a long-term perspective that aligns with mutual interests.
The dialogue follows the 2024 understanding reached between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at easing tensions in the Ladakh sector. Since this accord, there has been a revival of people-to-people interactions, including the resumption of the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra and border trade through designated routes, signaling a gradual normalization of ties. Doval highlighted that the improvement in bilateral relations is contingent on maintaining peace at the border.
While tangible progress on the demarcation of the disputed boundary remains undisclosed, both nations agreed to persist with negotiations, planning the next round of talks in India in 2027. China stressed that the boundary issue should be viewed within the broader context of their relationship, indicating a strategic approach to the ongoing discussions. The timing of these talks also gains significance as they precede an anticipated visit by Xi Jinping to India for the BRICS summit in September, underscoring efforts to further stabilize and enhance bilateral relations.
