In a significant milestone for China’s space ambitions, the Shenzhou-23 mission has successfully launched, sending three astronauts to the Tiangong space station. This mission is a crucial component of China’s broader plan to land humans on the moon by the year 2030. The launch took place at the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, with the Long March 2-F rocket carrying astronauts Lai Ka-ying, Zhu Yangzhu, and Zhang Zhiyuan. Notably, this mission includes the first astronaut from Hong Kong to travel to space, marking a historic moment for the region.
During their time aboard the Tiangong space station, the crew will be engaged in a variety of scientific experiments and research. Their focus will span across disciplines such as life sciences, medicine, fluid physics, and materials science. One of the astronauts is set to remain in orbit for an entire year, making this China’s longest human space mission.
